The Farsi Network is our ever growing Iranian community here at St G’s. We are increasingley becoming an international Church with lots of experiences from around the world to share. Mojtaba, Fatemeh, Laura and Jonathan are the Farsi Network leaders who share with us about Christmas in Iran.
In Iran the main annual celebration equivalent to our Christmas is the New Year (‘Now Rooz’) at the Spring Equinox in March. Families clean their houses, wear new clothes and visit each other over a two-week holiday, and various traditions are carried out including decorating a table beautifully with seven things beginning with ‘s’ (‘Haft Seen’). Nevertheless, for Christians in Iran 25 December is also becoming increasingly important.
"It’s the time when Iranian Christians can more easily share the Gospel with their families, just with a short sentence about the true meaning of the baby in the stable."
A member of Elam writes: “Over the Christmas holiday everyone phones everyone. It’s the time when Iranian Christians can more easily share the Gospel with their families, just with a short sentence about the true meaning of the baby in the stable. It is also a time when – inside and outside Iran – visitors come to the church. Many Iranians are genuinely pleased that Christians have such a happy festival. They have nothing comparable in their religion and are curious to find out more. So they come to meetings. The Gospel is preached; DVDs and books are given as presents.
How does the Farsi Network celebrate Christmas? Here in Leeds the Farsi Network are planning several events to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We hope to go into the city centre to evangelise; we hope to host a carol service with readings from Scripture, Iranian carols and poetry; and on Christmas Day the group will gather together to worship, to have fun, food and learn more about the origin of Christmas traditions in the UK such as the Christmas Tree and Father Christmas.
What can StG’s pray for the Farsi Network? Christmas is a very special opportunity for Iranians, as all of us, to proclaim the good news of our Saviour’s coming into the world. Please pray with us that many seeds will be sown and that God will make them grow; for people to come to faith and believers to be deeply encouraged in their faith. Pray for wisdom for all Iranians everywhere as they seek to share the joy they have with their families and others. Pray also for good, effective follow-up after Christmas services and evangelism.
Please also talk with us if you’d be interested in coming to or being involved in an event at St G’s!
